Webcam in the winter house for Japanese cranes
Live webcam is installed in the winter room for Japanese cranes in Muravyovsky Park, Amur Region. In severe frosts, cranes bask in a special room of the enclosure, and during the day they go for a walk in the open enclosure. A pair of Japanese cranes are named Snowman and Niko. The Snowman Crane is a descendant of the Kivili and Shizuoki couple that have bred for many years in the park, and Niko flew to Muravyovsky Park in the fall of 2022 from the Yakut Orto-Doidu Zoo. The couple was brought together in an aviary in September 2022 and now there is an opportunity to watch online how a new family of cranes is being formed.
The Japanese crane is the rarest of the Amur cranes and the second smallest in the world. Its world population is only about 2800-3000 individuals, and 1500 of them constantly live on the Japanese islands, without flying to the continent.
The rest of the population is continental, nesting almost exclusively in the Amur basin and migrating to South China and the Korean Peninsula for wintering. The largest, massive and rare species of cranes living in Russia: the weight of an individual reaches 11 kg, height up to 160 cm, wingspan up to 2.5 meters.
The combination of white and black feathers, thin neck and legs and natural ability to gracefully move make this bird one of the most beautiful in the world. A distinctive feature is the presence of a red «cap» on the head and a dark «mask» free from plumage in the front of the head.
The video surveillance project for Japanese cranes is being implemented jointly with the regional public environmental organization AmurSoES, the Muravyovka Natural Park for Sustainable Environmental Management.
